Twelve lively songs help to tell the story...

  • The Arizona Hummingbirds pro football team has seen better days.  Once the powerhouse of the league, the team has fallen into disrepair since the death of its 96 -year old owner.  The team's demise can be directly attributed to the old man's will, which left his fortune and team to his 30-ish ex-stripper wife.

The new owner calls a press conference to announce her very unfootball-like changes.  They're all outrageous.  A general malaise quickly settles over the organization.  Her beleaguered and overworked assistant bears the brunt of the public's overall dissatisfaction.  Worse, her hard work earns her nothing but contempt and belittlement from her boss.

The story is advanced by a team of unseen broadcasters.  The Hummers' season is a disaster.  Currently, they're tied for last place at 0-15.  If they lose their final game, the "Birds" would get first pick in the upcoming college draft.  The owner, infatuated with a star college quarterback, wants that 1st draft pick, so she has ordered her team to lose.  The Hummingbirds are not a happy football squad.

The head coach is a true football man.  He detests losing, although over the years, he's had more than a nodding acquaintance with the short end of the score.  But when the owner tells him to throw the final game, he nears his breaking point.

On the other hand, the studly quarterback is okay with losing as long as he looks good in doing so.  What he's not okay with is the owner drafting a new quarterback.  There's a limit to what one man can take.  Fortunately for the QB, the giant offensive lineman and the head cheerleader will each do whatever is necessary to protect him, on or off the field.

On the day of the big game, tensions run high and tempers flare.  However, just before the coin toss, word filters down that the owner has been kidnapped.  Restrained joy floods the field.  At kickoff, a surly, by the book lady detective arrives.  She proceeds with her investigation, even though the team is fighting for victory.  It's a tense, hard played game.  When the final gun sounds, each character arrives at a final resolve, be it win or lose ... love me or love me not ... or, most importantly, freedom or life without parole.

    What they are saying:

“Around these parts, Scottsdale’s Alexx Stuart reigns supreme over a very particular domain: humorous stage plays about sports.”

Chris Page, Reviewer, Get Out, 01/9/08

“If  you want a good laugh at the expense of your favorite game, here is the show to see. Darknight Productions has once again produced a zany musical mystery dinner theater production penned by Alexx Stuart, the wizard of song parody and Diedre Kaye, the master of directing a full length play in the tiniest space imaginable.”
